DOD to hold Scoping Meetings

Proposed firing ranges at Fena

In response to the lawsuit filed by We Are Guahan, the Guam Preservation Trust and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, DoD will be preparing a Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) about the potential site of 5 firing ranges. For the first time, DoD has announced its plans to potentially put the firing ranges at the Fena area, which is als known as “Naval Magazine.”

Scoping meetings will take place at the following:

March 17: University of Guam, 1:00pm – 5:00pm

March 19: Southern High School, 5:00pm – 9:00pm

March 20: Yigo Gymnasium, 5:00pm – 9:00pm

Joint Press Conference For Pågat Lawsuit Update

We Are Guåhan, the Guam Preservation Trust and the National Trust for Historic Preservation will be holding a press conference on November 19, 2011 to discuss recent developments in the Pågat lawsuit. The press conference will be held at the Lujan House at 10am and streamed live at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/we-are-guahan.

DoD Announces Another EIS

DoD has recently published notice of a new EIS to establish a “divert” runway. Scoping meetings will be held this week on Guam at the Barrigada Community Center and the Dededo Mayor’s Office on Thursday and Friday, from 5:30pm – 8:30pm.

Request Access to DoD Sites

DoD is now accepting comments it will use to develop a “Public Access Plan” to cultural sites on DoD property. A few sites that DoD has previously identified: (1) Haputo, (2) Almagosa Springs / Falls, (3) Fena Village, (4) Sumay Village, (5) Spanish Steps, (6) Tweed’s Cave, (7) Orote Point.

The Division of Social Work, in partnership with the Guahan Coalition for Peace and Justice will be sponsoring two public forums at the CLASS Lecture Hall in the Fall semester:

1) September 28th (5:30-8:30PM)- Public Forum titled, “Islands of Shame: Base Displacement from Diego Garcia to Guahan”. Speakers: Dr. David Vine, Department of Anthropology, American University and Attorney Leevin Camacho, We Are Guahan.

One year ago, a small group of folks were drawn together by a document (the DEIS) that painted a disturbing picture of our community’s future.

One year has since passed with over 25 events and initiatives — over 20,000 personal conversations — over 30,000 volunteer hours — Pagat lawsuit filed — and a continuing commitment to the future of our island and our people.

We celebrate a year and community brought together, to protect what we love.

Heritage Hikes: Tungo’ i Estoriå-ta

As part of its continued efforts to engage and educate the community on the impacts of the proposed buildup, We Are Guåhan is sponsoring “Heritage Hikes: Tungo’ i Estoriå-ta” throughout the month of November. These hikes will focus on sites that will be affected by the proposed buildup (Pågat and Mount Lamlam), as well as historic sites that were previously threatened by proposed military expansion (Cetti and Sella Bay). Professor Michael Lujan Bevacqua will be giving information on the history of each site throughout the hike.

The schedule is as follows:

November 6, 2010 – Pågat Village (Meet at Pågat trailhead along The Back Road)

November 13, 2010 – Cetti / Sella Bay (Meet at Cetti Bay parking lot)

November 20, 2010 – Mt. Lamlam (Meet at Sella Bay parking lot)

The show-time for all hikes is 8:30am, go-time 9:00am. All participants must bring LOTS of water and should bring light snacks or lunches. All participants should also dress appropriately and bring gloves. There will be sword-grass on some areas of the hikes.
